KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will assemble a top-end model in the product range of Aprilia – one of the most successful brands in world motorcycle racing – following a cooperation agreement between the Piaggio Group and Naza Premira Sdn Bhd, the sole distributor for Aprilia bikes in the country.
At the launch of the completely knocked down (CKD) edition of the Aprilia Shiver 750 yesterday, Naza Premira also announced the local assembly of the model at Naza’s manufacturing facility in Shah Alam starting next year.
A total of RM5mil is being invested in the development of the Shiver 750 CKD assembly operations and a further RM1mil is being committed to parts inventory, Naza Premira said in a statement.
Malaysia will be the first country in which Aprilia has Shiver 750 assembly operations outside of Italy. However, these units will only be made available to the Malaysian market at this time, it said in a statement.
The assembly of the motorcycles will be carried out by Naza Bikes Sdn Bhd while the distribution will be managed by Naza Premira.
Naza Premira forecasts to sell at least 600 units of the Aprilia Shiver 750 CKD edition in 2015. It said the facility in Shah Alam would be able to produce 1,200 units in the initial year of operation.
“Naza Premira is looking to expand the production capacity to between 3,000 and 5,000 units in the long run if it needs to cater to the Asean region,†the company said. Naza Premira has been importing completely built Aprilia motorcycles from the final assembly plant in Italy.-The Star
