PUTRAJAYA – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said any nation will not progress and succeed if the role of women is ignored in the process of national development.
All this while, many nations did not show their commitment to empower the women folk but they have realised that if the women were ignored the nation concerned could not possibly achieve success.
Speaking at the launching of the logo and brand for Empowering Women Year 2018 (TMW2018) here today, Najib said the government under his leadership was committed to empower women so that this group would get more opportunities, wider knowledge and more comprehensive involvement in the decision-making process whether in the public or private sector.
“As a government, we are determined to constantly elevate the role and dignity of the women in the country. Our record is most impressive in this regard but we are still not satisfied (with this achievement).
“What more in the globalisation era and the 4.0 Industrial Revolution, so the role of women is becoming more important,” he said.
Najib said he had announced the year 2018 as the Year For Empowering Women in tabling the 2018 Budget which would involve four programmes namely investment literacy, Malaysia Women Made, Impact for Humanity and Industrial Revolution 4.0.
He hoped the programme planned to empower women could be successfully implemented with the support of everyone including the non-governmental organisations which championed women’s rights.
“I am confident and believe that if all these programmes are implemented fully, we will see the elevation of women in the context of our national development.
“We also do not forget to focus on the B40 group so that one of the programmes is to push up their income within a short period,” he said.
The B40 group refers to the 40 per cent household income of RM3,900 and below per month.
At the event, Najib also presented a certificate each to two TMW2018 icons namely a member of the Selangor Royal Family, Datin Paduka Setia Tengku Zatashah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and the owner of Fashion Valet, Datin Vivy Yusof as the movers and drivers for the outstanding achievement in the fields of volunteerism and entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneur and celebrity Neelofa Mohd Nor was also appointed as a TMW2018 icon but was not present today.
Also present at the event were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim, other cabinet members and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa.
The LimKokWing University of Creative Technology choir group also sang the TMW2018 official song – Women of Tomorrow. – BERNAMA
