BEIJING – The moderate approach in countering global terrorism promoted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak since 2010 has receive praise from the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member countries.

It was conveyed by APEC foreign ministers in their meeting here today, Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Hamzah Zainudin said.

Hamzah, who represented Malaysia at the meeting, said APEC foreign ministers had also given good response to the approach and praised Najib’s move in introducing the Global Movement of the Moderates (GMM) four years ago.

As such, he said during the intervention session, he had also urged APEC member countries to counter terrorism as a team and not alone.

“I have also informed the meeting that as an Islamic country, Malaysia is calling for all countries to share their information and experiences, as well as to be open and to have mutual trust and respect.

“Through the GMM, we have also invited APEC member countries to adopt the approach promoted by our prime minister. It was well-accepted by the members at the meeting,” he told the Malaysian media at the Media Centre of the China National Convention Centre here today.

Also present were Foreign Ministry deputy secretary-general (Multilateral) Datuk Ho May Yong and Malaysian Ambassador to China Datuk Iskandar Sarudin.

Hamzah said he had also invited APEC members to make optimal use of the Southeast Asia Regional Centre for Counter-Terrorism (SEARCCT) set up by Malaysia in 2003 which had also organised various experience-sharing courses in countering terrorism.

“Countering terrorism is important because, if not, it will give major impact to the economic growth. So, I have stressed that if we don’t tackle the issue well, it will become a big problem,” he said.

It was Malaysia’s policies to put the people’s first, to ensure continuous economic growth and the prevent the spread of terrorist ideology and activities, he added.

Meanwhile, Najib is expected to arrive here on Sunday evening to attend the 22nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM), which will be held for two days from Monday. – BERNAMA
