KUANTAN – The trauma that a flood victim had to undergowading through waist-level flood waters for 50 metres while carrying her eight-month-old son was healed when she received a visit from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Shahnorizan Zamding, 31, who was given shelter at the relief centre at the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Gudang Rasau together with her husband, Mohd Zamri Abdul Wahid, 38, and their four children aged between 11 years and eight months, did not expect that the number one leader was willing to get down on the ground to find out about their welfare.

“I was touched that the Prime Minister came to ask how we were and he had time to ask whether we had received the flood assistance last year,” she said when met by reporters after Najib’s visit to the relief centre, here today.

Najib together with Pahang Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob spent more than half-an-hour to ask the flood victims, who had been evacuated to the relief centre since Wednesday night, how they were getting on.

In addition, the Prime Minister also inspected the facilities provided for the flood victims at the relief centre which accommodated 145 victims from 39 families from several villages near Sungai Belat.

Shahnorizan, who lives in Kampung Air Hitam, Sungai Belat however said that the flood this year was not as severe as last year when her whole house was under water.

Meanwhile, a senior citizen, Rokiah Mahmud, 70, also expressed her happiness when the Prime Minister spoke to her.

“I am thankful because the Prime Minister was willing to visit us at the relief centre and I am also thankful for the facilities provided to us here including the food and medical facilities,” she said.

Rokiah, who also lives in Kampung Air Hitam, said that her house was inundated almost every year.

The villager, who has 10 children, had moved to the relief centre since Thursday afternoon after her house was flooded up to the chest level. – BERNAMA
