KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today paid his last respects to former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, the late Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Zainal Abidin.
Najib arrived at Abdul Hamid’s residence in Bandar Tun Hussein Onn, Cheras, here at about 10am.
Also present were former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
Tun Mahathir, when approached by reporters, said Abdul Hamid’s passing was a great loss to the nation.
“I expressed my condolences to the late Abdul Hamid’s family,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) Datuk Othman Mustapha said the late Abdul Hamid had contributed significantly to Jakim when he was the department’s director-general from 1995 to 2000.
Abdul Hamid, who had 11 children, died of a heart attack at 9.45pm last night at the National Heart Institute.
He was a minister in the prime minister’s department from 2001 until 2004 and was the Mara chairman from 2004 until 2008. – BERNAMA
