PUTRAJAYA: The Prime Minister will issue a statement in regards to Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is embroiled in a controversy after urging Malays to boycott Chinese businesses which did not lower their prices despite the drop in petrol prices.
Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will hold a press conference this afternoon after discussing the issue at the Cabinet meeting this morning, confirmed Ismail.
“The Prime Minister said he will issue a statement, †Ismail Sabri told reporters here today.
Ismail said he will only speak to reporters after the Prime Minister has issued a statement on the matter.
Earlier, Ismail was mobbed by reporters today at a gathering to support the agriculture and agro-based industry minister by 92 Umno division heads here this morning.
In his Facebook status on Sunday, he had urged Malays to use their collective consumer power to boycott businesses, which refused to lower the price of goods despite the drop in oil price, but had singled out Chinese businesses.
He subsequently said that his statement was a personal opinion and not directed at all Chinese, but only traders who were profiteering.
Since then, he has been roundly criticised, not only by opposition politicians, but also his colleagues in the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, of which the lead Chinese party, MCA, is a member.-ABN News
