KUALA LUMPUR: The Prime Minister has assured all Tabung Haji depositors that their money is safe because it is guaranteed by the Government.
Dismissing talk which he said was being spread by irresponsible people about the haj pilgrims fund, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said there was no reason for the depositors to be worried.
“I would like to state on behalf of the Government that depositors need not worry because all deposits with Tabung Haji are guaranteed by the Government,†said Najib, who is also Umno president, after chairing the party’s supreme council meeting.
He said there was no reason for the depositors to be taken in by people who were trying to instigate them into withdrawing their money.
It was recently revealed that Tabung Haji bought a 0.64ha piece of land from Government-owned strategic development company 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) for RM188.5mil, which the Government had reportedly sold to 1MDB for RM4.5mil.
Following public furore over the purchase, Tabung Haji then agreed to sell the land.
On 1MDB, Najib said that the Umno supreme council felt that the probe by the Auditor-General needed to be expedited because people wanted to know the findings.
“The council also hopes that stern action will taken against those found to have flouted the law,†he said.
The Prime Minister had directed the Auditor-General to conduct an audit into the accounts of 1MDB and to forward its findings to the Public Accounts Committee for any further action.-The Star
