PUTRAJAYA – The Endowment, Tithe and Haj Department (Jawhar) has denied the involvement of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom in the organising of umrah trips for people in several areas in the country.
Jawhar director-general Datuk Anan C. Mohd said the umrah trip, which had allegedly been offered to the people in various locations including Langkawi, was a scam in which the organiser collected a deposit of RM500 from each participant.
“As a member of the Governing Council for Umrah, JAWHAR would also like to
remind the public to be wary of umrah trips offered by scammers, who usually use
the names of prominent leaders and celebrities to attract the victims,” he said
in a statement here today.
Besides, he said there were three types of scams involving umrah trips, namely a scam with the scammer having no intention to provide the service; a scam in which victims did not get the service they were promised; and a scam tantamount to cheating using scratch and win ticket, lucky draw or life membership card.
Anan also advised the public to check the Jawhar’s web portal or the Tourism and Culture Ministry’s website to see the list of travel agencies having valid licence to offer umrah packages. – BERNAMA
