KUALA LIPIS – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak visited the flood evacuation centre at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Clifford here, the first evacuation centre and flood-affected area out of several in the state that he would visit today.

Accompanied by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, the Prime Minister arrived at the evacuation centre which provided shelter to 315 victims in the surrounding areas at 10.45am.

In his speech, Najib called on the victims comprising 173 men and 137 women to be patient in facing the unexpected disaster as the federal and state governments were working closely to do whatever was best to ease the heavy burden borne by all the victims.

He said that among the immediate action taken by the government was announcing an additional allocation of RM500 million yesterday to assist the flood victims and to speed up the distribution of the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) to mid-January instead of the end of January as was agreed upon earlier.

Although the aid provided was not enough to meet all the losses suffered by the victims, yet the government tried to do whatever was best for the people, he said.

Meanwhile, when addressing the 410 victims at the evacuation centre at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Padang Tengku, he described the disaster as a lesson for everyone to be more responsible in whatever they were doing to avoid the occurrence of a flood.

The Prime Minister also shared his sadness over what was happening but was glad that he had the opportunity to be with the people when they were being hit by the disaster.

Najib also said that his decision to return home immediately from his vacation in Hawaii with his family was a small sacrifice compared with the difficulties faced by the victims.

“Although my family was sad that I had to leave them, I told them that what they were experiencing could not compare with the feelings of the flood victims and I am grateful that I could make several decisions to ease the sadness of the victims,” he said.

After Kuala Lipis, Najib would also visit several other areas affected by the floods in Jerantut and Temerloh. – Bernama
