KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has extended condolences to governments and the people of Italy and Myanmar following the earthquake disasters in the two countries which resulted in loss of lives.
“My deepest condolences to the Government and people of Italy affected by the earthquake.
“Myanmar was also affected by an earthquake with historical sites damaged and lives lost. My sympathies to the people of Myanmar,” he tweeted in his Twitter account @NajibRazak today.
Reuters reported that the death toll from the devastating earthquake in central Italy rose sharply to almost 250 people early Thursday after rescue teams worked through the night to try to find survivors under the rubble of flattened towns.
The news agency said the strong 6.2 magnitude quake struck early on Wednesday as people slept, razing homes and buckling roads.
In Myanmar, Reuters reported that at least 187 of the brick temples were damaged in a powerful 6.8 magnitude quake that shook buildings across the Southeast Asian country on Wednesday.
The news agency also quoted the Red Cross officials saying they received reports of three people killed – two children and one resident from two towns close to the epicentre. – BERNAMA
