PETALING JAYA: The Prime Minister has expressed his sorrow over the Form Five student who committed suicide after being unable to answer SPM exam questions.
“My deepest condolences to the student’s mother over the loss of her beloved child. As a father, I share the sorrow of the victim’s family,†said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in a post on his Facebook page on Friday.
On Tuesday, it was reported that 17-year-old student Hon Ye took his life at his family home in Jinjang.
The SMK Raja Abdullah student, whom a relative said had obtained 9As and 1B in the SPM trial examination, had felt disappointed with his performance in the difficult Additional Mathematics 1 paper.
Najib said that exams “are not everything†despite their importance, and said the “main thing†is family ties.
“I hope the Education Ministry and related parties take this matter seriously. Help in the form of guidance and counselling must be increased to prevent incidents like these from happening again,†he added.
