KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has conveyed his condolences over the demise of former ASEAN secretary-general Dr Surin Pitsuwan in Bangkok.
“Sad to hear of the passing of Surin Pitsuwan, former secretary-general of ASEAN and (former) Thai foreign minister. A great loss not just to ASEAN but also to the world of diplomacy. Al-Fatihah,” Najib said on Twitter.
It was reported that Surin, 68, died of heart failure.
He collapsed while preparing to attend the Thailand Halal Assembly 2017 near Bangkok and was brought to the Ramkhamhaeng Hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 3pm local time.
Surin was Thailand’s deputy foreign minister from 1992 to 1995 and rose to become the country’s foreign minister from 1997 to 2001 under Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai. On Jan 1, 2008, he was named ASEAN secretary-general. – BERNAMA
