KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak praised the determination and teamwork shown by the national netball team which clinched gold in the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games today.
Najib also commended the composure showed by the team in critical moments during their final match against defending champions Singapore at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara.
He was with his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor at the stadium to cheer the Malaysian team. Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim was also present.
“Fantastic! It was a really spirited performance by them (national team),” said Najib, when met later.
“They worked together as a team until they emerged champions”.
Earlier, Najib had also congratulated the team via Twitter.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also took the opportunity to congratulate the team.
“Congratulations to the Malaysian netball team for winning the gold. Athletes, continue to show that fighting spirit.” said Zahid, via Twitter.
Earlier, Malaysia beat Singapore 65-41 to take back the netball gold from Singapore.
Netball made its debut in the 2001 KL Games, and Malaysia won the inaugural gold also by beating Singapore.
However, two years ago at the Singapore’s Sea Games, Malaysia surrendered the gold to the host.
This is the third time the sport is being held in the Sea Games, with the title returning to Malaysia. – NST
