KUALA LUMPUR: Myanmar President U Thein Sein, who is on a two day maiden visit to Malaysia was accorded a state welcoming ceremony at the Parliament Square today.
Thein Sein and his wife, Daw Khin Khin Win, were greeted upon arrival at 4.50pm by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Muâ€™adzam Shah and the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajah Haminah.
Also present was Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.
The president later inspected a guard of honour mounted by 103 officers and men from the First Battalion Royal Malay regiment after the national anthems from both countries were played.
A 21 gun salute was also fired to mark the occasion.
The president was also introduced to the Malaysian cabinet ministers present.
A Wisma Putra statement said Thein Sein, who became the President of Myanmar in 2011, is also scheduled to have a restricted meeting with Najib.
The statement said Thein Sein and Najib are expected to discuss the latest developments on the bilateral cooperation between Myanmar and Malaysia, besides exchanging views on regional issues.
Myanmar is Malaysia’s 38th largest trading partner globally and seventh largest trading partner among the ASEAN member countries, with total trade between the two countries recorded at RM3.18 billion last year.-NST
