KUALA LUMPUR – An ethnic Rohingya vegetable seller was fined RM2,500 by the Magistrate’s Court here today for causing hurt to his fellow countryman with a broomstick last year.
Magistrate Mahyudin Mohmad Som meted down the sentence on Nurul Islam Noor Muhammad, 35, after he pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt on Mohamad Bala Muhammad Shah, 27, also a vegetable seller.
The court also ordered the father of three to be jailed for four months if he failed to pay the fine. He paid the fine.
Nurul Islam was charged with committing the offence at Selayang Lama Wholesale Market, Sentul, at 1 am on Nov 19 last year.
The charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of 10 years or with a fine or whipping or any two of such punishments upon conviction.
In mitigation, lawyer S.Narasimhan, representing Nurul Islam appealed for a minimum fine on the grounds that he had regretted his action. However deputy public prosecutor Noor Farah Adilah Nordin urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence as a lesson to the accused. – BERNAMA
