JOHOR BARU: Fear of getting caught might have driven the person responsible for chopping a baby’s body into 15 pieces before flushing it down the toilet.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) psychiatrist Prof Dr Syed Mohamed Shafeq Syed Mansor said the person, probably young, panicked and wanted to dispose of the body quickly.

“This person might be a young woman who is not prepared to become a mother. This could explain why the baby’s body was chopped into several pieces,” he said yesterday.

Dr Syed Mohamed Shafeq, who has more than 25 years’ experience in psychiatry, said if it was indeed the mother who was responsible for the act, the community should support her instead of being judgmental.

He said what was important was to provide her psychological help because she might be suffering from a mental problem.

“She might have been ashamed of getting pregnant at an early age. The community, family members and friends should help her.

“She may also be suffering from post-natal depression and this can lead to other problems,” he said.

On Sunday, a group of contract workers found body parts of an infant at a sewerage plant in Kempas near here.

It is believed that the parts were flushed down the toilet before they became stuck at the waste trap of the sewerage plant.

Johor Baru (North) OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Khamsani Abdul Rahman said police were still trying to locate the baby’s head and abdomen.

“We are working with the residents committee, the management, and Indah Water to find the missing parts,” he said.-The Star
