KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir say they will look for a “sustainable platform†to continue their cause but need time to do so.
Muhyiddin said they needed time to mull over the direction they would take because they no longer had a political platform.
“We need to think about the direction of the country.
“We are independents now and we have to ensure we have a sustainable approach.
“We need to speak to others who share the same views and interests as us,†the Pagoh MP told a press conference at the Universiti Malaya Alumni Association here yesterday, which was attended by Mukhriz.
The former deputy prime minister and Mukhriz – the Ayer Hitam assemblyman and former Kedah mentri besar – were expelled from Umno in an unanimous decision by the supreme council for infringing party discipline.
Asked if they would work with the Opposition or Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to achieve the sustainable platform, Muhyiddin reiterated that they would need more time.
“I met Tun Mahathir on the day I was sacked but before the decision was made by the supreme council.
“I had shared many platforms with him, even right here for the Citizens’ Declaration,†he said without elaborating.
Mukhriz said if he had intended to betray the Government, he would have asked for the Kedah state assembly to be dissolved while he was still the mentri besar.
“But I didn’t do that, and yet I am a traitor,†he said.
Speaking after the press conference, Mukhriz said the recent warming of ties between Umno and PAS was a warning that the former was prepared to give up Kedah to the Islamist party.
“At the rate things are going, it seems like Umno is willing to give Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu back to PAS.
“That must be the deal,†he added.
