KUANTAN – The appointment of Christoph R Mueller as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAS NewCo) is a sign of the commitment by Khazanah Nasional Bhd to strengthen the national carrier.
Transport Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said the German, who has been CEO of Ireland’s Aer Lingus since 2009, successfully repositioned the airline in respect of its business model and is capable of helping MAS improve on performance and catalpult it to being among the best locally and globally.
In this regard, he added, the question of MAS or Khazanah Nasional denying the ability of locals to head the national airline, did not materialise.
“We have for sure a lot of Malaysians with MAS.But we now want to restructure MAS, and have tried various means previously, without sucesss.
“It is not a problem to appoint those with ability. What is important is to see results and the reality of MAS becoming a reputable airline again,” Liow said.
He told reporters this after attending the New Village East Coast Zone Development and Safety Committee Seminar here today.
The appointment of Mueller was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in a statement last Friday.
The appointment, however, drew criticism from certain quarters who wanted a Malaysian to lead MAS Newco.
Meanwhile, Liow rejected the allegation that the MAS Act passed by Parliament on Nov 27 denied the rights of workers, including making any sort of demand from MAS.
He said although there would be a reduction in the workforce by 6,000, they were not being summarily dismissed, but being reskilled to enable them to be absorbed into goverment-linked companies. – BERNAMA
