KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia as host of the ninth ASEAN Para Games will send the biggest contingent of 372 athletes and will take part in all 16 events on Sept 17-23.
2017 Kuala Lumpur Secretariat chief executive officer, Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong said, according to the registration as per entry by number, which was closed on March 31, Thailand came in second, with 272 athletes who would take part in 15 events.
“Thailand, which has emerged champions several times in the ASEAN Para Games prior to this, will not take part in the cycling events.
“Brunei and Timor Leste are sending the smallest contingents, 31 and 36 athletes each. Vietnam has requested to send an ‘entry by number’ list on April 10,” he said.
He said this after a monthly gathering and integrity oath-taking by the officers and staff of the secretariat at the Gymnasium 111 Lobby, National Sports Council, Bukit Jalil today.
Zolkples said the sport which recorded the highest participation was athletics at 272 athletes to date, not including the participation of athletes from Vietnam while swimming would be participated by 171 athletes.
The 16 sport events at the ASEAN Para Games are athletics, archery, badminton, boccia, chess, cycling, five aside football (visually handicapped), seven aside football (cerebral palsy), goalball, powerlifting, sitting volleyball, swimming, table tennis, ten-pin boling, wheel-chair tennis and wheel-chair basketball.
“The event with the least participation is football five aside which is only participated by Malaysia, Laos and Thailand.
“The list of entry by name will be opened to the respective National Paralympic Committee (NPC) on April 15 and closing date is on July 12,” he said.
Zolkples said the date of application and closing for accreditation is the same as registration in accordance to name. – BERNAMA
