KUALA LUMPUR – Many problems in the country can be solved if all parties, especially members of parliament (MPs), understood the federal constitution, says Dewan Negara president Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang.
He said by understanding the constitution, MPs would know of the contributions that must be made to ensure preservation of the sovereignty and peace of the nation.
He stressed that the federal constitution must be protected to preserve political stability and ensure the people’s loyalty.
“I wonder if all the elected representatives understand our constitution…this is very important.
“If this is well understood, I believe half our problems would be over,” he said when launching a book, ‘Evolusi Parlimen dan Evolusi Speaker Parlimen Malaysia Edisi Kedua’ here today.
Also present was Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who wrote the book, as well as Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka director-general Datuk Dr Awang Sariyan.
The 392-page book revolves around the history of the establishment of the Bicameral Parliament.
Priced at RM50, the book also discusses the appointment of the Dewan Negara president and deputy president, according to the federal constitution after the Bicameral Parliament was created in September 1959.
It also discusses the appointment of the deputy presidents of the Dewan Rakyat and touches briefly on the appointment of the ‘Clerk to the Council’ or Secretary to the Dewan Negara and Dewan Rakyat. – BERNAMA
