JITRA – Moral and character education should be the core business in the country’s education in order to produce individuals who are trustworthy, responsible and with integrity, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
The deputy prime minister said honesty, trustworthiness and integrity were the intrinsic values that formed the backbone of the country’s development.
“This can be realised if teachers always apply values such as honesty, trustworthiness, transparent and noble character in teaching and learning processes as well as in sports and co-curriculum activities,” he said when officiating the national-level Teachers’ Day celebration at Wawasan Hall here today.
Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said good character and noble personality were emphasised not only by Muslims, but by all religions and beliefs.
Without integrity, even on a few individuals, it might cause great calamity to an industry, society and country, said Muhyiddin.
In a multi-racial country like Malaysia, Muhyiddin said, moral and character education must emphasised the principle of respecting differences, celebrating diversities and fostering good relations among ethnic groups and religions.
He said the task of educating students to be good in characters and disciplined was not just for moral education or Islamic education teachers, but for all teachers.
“If we can make school as centre of moral upbringing and excellent student personality, I am confident that our desire to produce individuals who are knowledgeable and with noble character will become a reality,” he said.
He said teachers played an important role to enhance the students’ character and to form balanced and excellent students.
“In the enthusiasm to pursue material advancement, character aspect and good values must be given major attention by our educational system.
“For me the character, integrity, trustworthiness and good values aspects are very important components in building the nation and achieve sustainable economic development,” he said.
The Teachers’ Day celebration, themed ‘Guru: Membina Ilmu Menyempurnakan Akhlak’ (‘Teacher: Building Knowledge Improving Characters’) was also attended by Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, deputy ministers Mary Yap Kain Ching and P.Kamalanathan and also the ministry’s officers.
