KUALA LUMPUR – Innovatige Sdn Bhd, the rights-holder for the Monsoon Cup has decided to change the format of the prestigious international match racing event starting this year.
The company in the statement issued today said the 2014 edition would begin with Stage One known as Monsoon Cup Terengganu, which to be held from Nov 19 to 22 in Pulau Duyong, Terengganu, where the top match racing sailors from Asia Pacific region would compete to secure a place for the main championship.
It said the main championship known as Monsoon Cup Malaysia, which was a part of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour (AWMRT) would be held in Johor from Feb 10 to 14 next year, where 12 teams including Monsoon Cup Terengganu winner and the 1Malaysia Match Racing Team would be battling for top honours.
In the same statement, Chairman of Innovatige Sdn Bhd, Tunku Abdul Jalil Sultan Ibrahim said the formation of the 1Malaysia Match Racing Team and the second team to compete at Monsoon Cup this year would further expand the objective of giving local sailors the chance to participate and learn from world-class sailors, especially from the Asia Pacific region.
“A bigger public following for the sport is also expected as more sailing enthusiasts would be able to have the Monsoon Cup experience in Terengganu and Johor.
“With Malaysia as the only Asian destination on the tour, the two venues would surely add excitement to the championship,” Tunku Jalil said, adding that the company had also held discussion with all the stakeholders, such as the National Sports Council and the Malaysian Yachting Association and the respective state governments to ensure the successful organisation of the 2014 edition.
Innovatige Sdn Bhd entered into a rights holder agreement in April 2013 with Pro Match Tour Ltd, the franchise owners of the Alpari WMRT series, to organise the final stage of the WMRT, or also known as the Monsoon Cup in Malaysia.
The AWMRT is a leading professional sailing series and is granted “Special Event” status by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF), the world governing body for the sport of sailing.
The Monsoon Cup is considered one of the flagship stages of the World Championship Tour, and awards higher points (x1.5) as the final event of the Series.
For the record, the annual Monsoon Cup has been held in Pulau Duyong, Terengganu, since 2005. – Bernama
