Mohd Nafizwan Adnan (Bernama file pix)KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 (Bernama)– National champion, Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan reached the third round of the 2016 Men’s World Squash Championship after pulling off a major upset in the tournament in Cairo, Egypt late Saturday (early Sunday in Malaysia).
The unseeded player, who is ranked 33rd in the world, stunned world number 3 and the third seeds Omar Mosaad of Egypt in a marathon game in the second round which lasted 102 minutes; winning 3-2 (6-11, 11-8, 12-10, 1-11,12-10) at the Wadi Degla Club.
Speaking to the press after the match, Mohd Nafiizwan said that he never thought that he would finally manage to beat the lanky Egyptian for the first time.
“When I was (trailing) behind, he was winning points off my mistakes. So it was a question of discipline. That’s what I have been working on with (coach) Peter Genever, and James Simpson, our video analyst. “Be patient” they told me. “I just thought to myself that I should have fun.I had fun with the moment, the pressure, with everything and I got the luck”
“I’m really happy, I told myself that today could be my last match so I wanted to put in 100 per cent,” the Manchester-based player added.
Mohd Nafiizwan is slated to meet another Egyptian, Fares Dessouky in the third round match late Sunday after the 15th seeded player defeated Gregoire Marche of France; 13-11, 11-5, 8-11 and 11-9 in another second round match.
