MELAKA – The Yang Dipertua Negeri of Melaka Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob will be conferred a doctoral degree in history by Kolej Universiti Islam Melaka (KUIM) in October.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said the conferment would make Mohd Khalil the first person to receive a PhD from the private tertiary institution, fully owned by the Melaka state government.
He said for his research, Mohd Khalil had carried out a historical study of 184 local and foreign books.
“We are very proud of KUIM’s achievements as it seeks to be upgraded to become the first private Islamic university in the country. The state government hopes this effort to upgrade is successful,” he told reporters outside the state assembly hall, here, today.
KUIM, previously known as Kolej Islam Melaka, was set up under the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996 before it was upgraded to become a university college on July 1, 2009 by the Higher Education Ministry. It has produced 7,950 graduates in various disciplines. – BERNAMA
