Moderate Earthquake Hits Northern Sumatra, Indonesia

KUALA LUMPUR – A moderate earthquake, measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale, hit an area off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia, at 2.03 am today, the Malaysian Meteorological Department reported.

It said in a statement that the epicentre of the earthquake was 542km southwest of Great Nicobar, India, and 1,116km southwest of Langkawi, Kedah.

However, no tsunami threat was reported, it said. – BERNAMA
