KOTA KINABALU – The Sabah-level 51st anniversary of Malaysia Day was celebrated in a moderate but meaningful manner today at the Kota Kinabalu Multipurpose Sports Complex in Likas here.
The event, organised by the Sabah Youth and Sports Ministry, saw a gathering of more than 5,000 people comprising youths, civil servants and the public.
The Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin inspected a guard-of-honour in the compound of the complex upon his arrival. He was accompanied to the event by his wife, Toh Puan Norlidah RM Jasni.
Also present were Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, who represented Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman; Sabah Youth and Sports Minister and event organising chairman Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan as well as several other ministers.
Fifty-one youth leaders of the various communities born on Sept 16 read out the Rukun Negara pledge and sang patriotic songs and read out poems.
A total of 1,456 members of 26 uniformed youth organisations participated in a parade.
An exhibition was also held of a collection of photographs and articles on Malaysia Day, the Yang Dipertuas Negeri of Sabah since 1963 and Sabah’s independence within Malaysia.
The national-level 51st Malaysia Day celebration is scheduled to be held tonight in Miri, Sarawak. – BERNAMA
