HULU TERENGGANU – A body of a Form Four student who was reported missing since Saturday after taking part in the Gunung Gajah Terom marathon at the Sekayu Forest Reserve in Kuala Berang was found today.
The body of Ahmad Rafikin Azman, 16, a student from Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Mahmud, Kuala Terengganu was found among rocks at 3.30pm today, near the track, by a search and rescue team.
Hulu Terengganu deputy police chief ASP Rosli Amir when met by Bernama however, did not elaborate further about the incident.
“The body of the victim was brought down at about 6.40pm and sent to the Hulu Terengganu hospital for post-mortem,” he said.
Efforts to bring down Ahmad Rafikin’s body was hampered by the slippery path, heavy rain and treacherous conditions.
Meanwhile, the situation at the operations camp was gloomy as members of Ahmad Rafikin’s family could not control their emotion.
Ahmad Rafikin, who was among 540 participants in the race, did not complete the Gunung Gajah Terom marathon and his father, Azman Othman, 50, lodged a police report at about 6pm on Saturday.
Azman had earlier notified the organiser when he could not find Ahmad Rafikin when he came to fetch him at about 3pm after the race had ended while the race secretariat had said Ahmad Rafikin had passed the first checkpoint of the race for the junior 12km category at 9.26am but did not complete the race.
The race was organised by the Terengganu Tourism and Culture Ministry office and managed by the National Adventure Association. – BERNAMA
