MIRI – A rural longhouse in the Tinjar sub-district in northern Sarawak, is on the verge of tumbling into the Baram River because of a deteriorating hillslope.
Residents of Rumah Sara alerted the Civil Defence Unit after hearing loud cracking sounds at night, Miri unit chief Mohd Hazle Shah said in Civil Defence Miri’s latest report on Thursday (March 22).
The unit deployed a team to the longhouse, about three hours by boat from Miri, and found that the failing hillslope is only a few feet from the longhouse itself, which was built on the summit.
Mohd Hazle said residents told his men that the hillslope had started eroding two days ago after a heavy downpour.
His personnel at the site found four places where there are cracks and soil movement, he said.
Water is seeping into these cracks and making the soil unstable, he added.
The more than 100 residents have been warned that they must prepare to evacuate if the erosion gets any closer to the longhouse structure. – The Star Online
