KUALA LUMPUR – Some technical errors during a news broadcast by Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) on TV1 caught the attention of Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek who has directed his ministry to investigate the incident in detail.
He said the errors would be examined to see whether they stemmed from technical weaknesses or occurred inadvertently, because, as the national broadcaster, the incident should not have happened.
“I have asked to have a system to punish those who commit such offences whether due to negligence or something that could tarnish the image of RTM,” he told reporters after opening the Deepavali Carnival 2014 in Bukit Jalil here, yesterday.
The error was detected during the live broadcast of TV1 news Saturday.
On another development, Ahmad Shabery said he was ready to talk further with the government adviser for social and cultural affairs, Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim, on the ministry’s proposal for Bernama TV to fully offer English language news
by next year.
“People are no longer talking about broadcasting, but narrowcasting which means each channel has a specialisation as a news channel, entertainment, sports and others that focus on using a language,” he said.
Rais, who was formerly information, communication and culture minister, said today that local television stations needed to ensure that there was space in the struggle to uphold the national language. – Bernama
