TANGKAK – UMNO members have been asked to give priority to the party so that it would continue being the pillar of the strength and success for the race, religion and the country.
In making the call, party vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein also said UMNO members should avoid getting involved in major issue because if not handled well, it could become the factor that would destroy the party.
“UMNO members must take good care of their respective states and must not leave that responsibility to one man alone.
“That is also why we should not let major issue to destroy us. Let’s take it as a challenge to rise again,” he told reporters after opening the Ledang UMNO delegates meeting here today.
Also present were Ledang UMNO chief Datuk Ir Hamim Samuri, Serom assemblyman Abd Razak Minhat and former Johor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Othman.
Hishammuddin, who is also Defence Minister, also praised Johor UMNO for having a 10-year strategic plan to empower the party, including the plan to set up an UMNO school.
“Personally, I fully support the efforts taken by the Johor UMNO Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin to formulate a 10-year plan for UMNO Johor.
“This is to ensure that the party will remain relevant and that Johor UMNO will continue upholding the existing values so as not to jeopardise the party,” he said.
In his speech earlier, Hishammuddin said the party was facing a great challenge and burden right now, and if not well addressed, the largest Malay party in the country would become irrelevant.
He said what was happening now could be described as the biggest test that would determine UMNO’s survival.
“I have to be honest. I’m worried and I cannot hide it. If we failed to face the challenge in a mature and effective manners soon, we will break, collapse and end up just as a page in the history book,” he said.
As such, party members were advised to stay united and not to fall for those who were trying to take advantage of the situation, he added. – BERNAMA
