KUALA LUMPUR: The media should help explain the government’s policies to the public so that they are not confused by malicious reports by irresponsible parties, said Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin.
He said the press was an important medium for his ministry to convey its messages to the public.
“Cooperation between the ministry and the media is important to ensure accurate and credible news are conveyed to the public.
“As such, I urge the media to be more responsible in helping to convey our policies to the public so that they understand them better and indirectly help the country to progress,” he said at the ministry’s media night here tonight.
Meanwhile, Malaysian National News Organisation (Bernama) general manager Datuk Zulkefli Salleh, who represented the media at the event, in his speech said that the event was a recognition of the media’s efforts in helping to convey information to the public.
“The prizes given to media personnel (tonight) will hopefully encourage them to work harder,” he said.
At the event, Bernama Radio24 won first, second and third place in the radio broadcast category in the ministry’s media awards with its producer Hassan Sallehudin Yahya better known as Essan Yahya taking the top prize of RM3,000 for the station’s “Ops Bongkar! Jualan Akhir Tahun” expose.
Essan also took the RM2,000 second prize for the “Harga Minyak Turun, Barang Tetap Mahal” report.
Producer Azmir Sharifuddin was the third place winner for the MyIpo slot and took home RM1,000.
About 200 media practitioners were present at the event.
