TUMPAT – Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Pengkalan Kubor by-election, Mat Razi Mat Ail, is doing exactly what Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar, the incumbent Pengkalan Kubor Assemblyman who died from liver cancer last Aug 20, did to ensure voters in the constituency continue to support the coalition.
“He (Noor Zahidi) always told me to visit the sick, attend tahlil and funeral ceremony held by residents in the constituency. The people will talk if their elected representative is not there.
“That was his formula, he told me, and I, too, will do the same,” said Mat Razi.
He told this to reporters after flagging off Nadzeri Mustaffa, a trader, who is on a solo kayaking expedition to Perlis at the Geting Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM) jetty here today.
Mat Razi said the BN campaign for the by-election was progressing smoothly and his relation with the opposition parties was good.
“The response from local residents and the Siamese community is good,” he said and hoped the situation would continue for the next four days prior to polling day on Sept 25.
The Pengkalan Kubor by-election is called following the death of Noor Zahidi, who was the assemblyman for three terms.
The by-election is a three-cornered contest among Mat Razi, Wan Rosdi Wan Ibrahim of PAS and independent Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary.
Noor Zahidi had retained the seat in the general election held last year with a majority of 1,736 votes, beating Saharun Ibrahim of PKR and Izat Bukhary. – BERNAMA
