JOHOR BAHRU – The marine police smoked out an attempt to smuggle a consignment of contraband cigarettes after intercepting a high speed boat near Batu Pahat, about 118km from here early today.
The seized cigarattes were worth about RM228,094, including unpaid taxes.
Region Two Marine Police Force (PPM) commander ACP Paul Khiu Khon Chiang said a team of marine policemen in two patrol boats detected the boat about 1.30am, during an operation dubbed ‘Ops Pensura’, off the Parit Jabar beach in Senggarang.
At that time, the contraband cigarettes – believed to be from a neighbouring country – were in the midst of being transferred from the boat to a vehicle on land.
“However, the vehicle sped off when its occupants became aware of the policemen,” Khiu told reporters here today.
He said the contraband and an outboard engine worth RM50,000 were taken to the Region Two PPM headquarters in Tampoi here to facilitate investigations. – BERNAMA
