KUCHING – The Marine Police seized 50,000 litres of diesel suspected to have been smuggled from Labuan in a raid in Kuala Lawas, Lawas, yesterday.
Marine Police Region Five commander ACP N. Kalai Chelvan said a four-member Limbang Marine Police team on an intelligence-gathering operation came across a tugboat at 1.45pm and found that the back portion of the boat had been converted into a tank.
An examination found that the tank contained diesel, he said, adding that there were no documents on board to show that the boat carried the fuel and that it was obtained from Labuan.
“The boat and the diesel were seized and handed over to the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism office in Lawas for further action with regard to offences under the Control of Supplies Act,” he said in a statement.
Kalai Chelvan said the boat was valued at RM150,000 and the diesel, RM80,000.
He said a police report was lodged at the Lawas Police Station.
Kalai Chelvan urged the public and government agencies to furnish information to help prevent or curb criminal activities.
Such information can be directed to the Marine Police Region Five via telephone at 082-334111 or fax at 082-344780, he said. – BERNAMA
