KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Agricultural Research Development Institute (MARDI) today introduced its new hybrid orchid which immortalises the name of Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin.
Named ‘Perreiraara Tun Dr Juhar’, the hybrid orchid which was a grafting innovation of the ‘Aerides Lawrenceae’ and ‘Vandachostylis Five Friendshis’ species, was launched in conjunction with his 62nd birthday. The launch was officiated by Tun Juhar and witnessed by MARDI chairman Datuk Fadil Osman and MARDI Director-General Datuk Dr Sharif Haron.
Also present were Tun Juhar’s wife Toh Puan Hajah Norlidah R.M Jasni and Sabah Deputy Chief Minister and Sabah Agriculture and Food Industry Minister, Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin.
The new intergeneric hybrid produces a beautiful white pink flower which is attractive and aromatic, measuring five centimetres wide, with moderately-long stalk which can last a month.
The hybrid was registered with the the International Registration Authority for Hybrid Orchids, United Kingdom in April.– BERNAMA/Image Credit: Metro Harian
