TAWAU: A man kicked open the door to his children’s bedroom to wake them up and escape a fire that destroyed over 300 squatter houses here early today.
Sinab Umar, 48, said he was awakened at about 1.30am by the shouts of ‘Fire! Fire!’and his first thought was of his children.
“I kicked open the door to my children’s bedroom and got them to run out of the house,” he said, adding that it was the second fire the family had suffered.
The houses at Lorong Habib Abdul Rahman, Batu 2, Jalan Apas, and Block 10 Kampung Titingan Darat were destroyed even as 34 firemen fought to bring the blaze under control by 5.30am.
Tawau Fire and Rescue Department supervisor Faisal Ahmad said firemen had difficulty driving into the settlement and the water pressure was low as well.
He said in a statement that there were no casualties and the damage had yet to be ascertained.
The firemen were assisted by the police, Department of Civil Defence and Tawau Municipal Council personnel and the public.
Another resident, Andi Raski Safari, 19, said she was sad that her husband was away in Kota Kinabalu transporting goods and would be back only this evening.
“My husband transports goods between Tawau and Kota Kinabalu,” said Andi Raski, who got married last December.
The settlement suffered a fire in 1999.
