Malaysia’s Unique Heritage Main Attration On Unesco Day

KUALA LUMPUR – “Amazing, different, fantastic”, these are among compliments of foreign tourists met at Malaysia Unesco Day 2014 celebration at Dataran Merdeka here, today.

Tourists were seen streaming to the area as early as 10 am to wintess the country’s unique heritage, cultural performances, traditional games and sample popular Malaysian food such as laksa, asam pedas, pasembor and char koey teow.

Bill Carr, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) member from Scotland said the unique culture and heritage drew him to visit Malaysia.

“Malaysia has the best culture and heritage. The people are so friendly, regardless of race,” the 65 year-old volunteer worker told Bernama.

Carr, who was found in the Malay traditional dress and weapons section was excited when given the chance to try a Malay traditional dress and hold a keris.

“Its really great to be here. I will share my experience with my wife and children when I go back to my country,” he added.

Tomoyasu Suzuki, 41, and Mayuko Suzuki, 36, described the exhibition as an interesting experience even though it was their first visit to Malaysia.

“Its amazing to see the Malay traditional costumes, old weapons, food and many more,” said the couple from Japan.

Meanwhile, Hazizah Arshad, said she visited the exhibition to expose her children to the history of Malaysia.

Hazizah,54, came with her two children, Siti Nuraini Mat Rashid, 12, and Abdul Ayman,9.

Yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also Malaysian National Commission for Unesco (MNCU) president opened the exhibition themed ‘Warisan Kita, Warisan Dunia.

The two-day exhibition was organised by the Ministry of Tourism with the collaboration of MNCU.- BERNAMA
