KUALA LUMPUR – Chinese New Year is celebrated not only by the Chinese community but also by other communities in the spirit of 1Malaysia.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his deputy, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today joined thousands of people at the MCA and Gerakan open house here.
The open house, synonymous with Malaysia’s plural society, is organised to enhance ties among friends and acquaintances.
In JOHOR BAHARU, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin joined thousands of people at two Chinese New Year open house and enjoyed delicacies and lion dance performance to bring prosperity and good luck.
The first by the Federation of Johor Baharu Chinese was held at Dewan Besar Wong Shee Fun, Taman Sri Tebrau while State Tourism, Trade and Consumerism Committee chairman, Datuk Tee Siew Kiong held his at Dewan Jubli Intan, Pontian.
In MELAKA, the Melaka MCA open house at Dewan SM Pay Fong in Jalan Kubu was attended by thousands of guests of various races.
Popular tourist spots such as Bandar Hilir and Jonker Walk were crowded with local and foreign tourists who arrived here to celebrate Chinese New Year.
In IPOH, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir attended the open house by former transport minister Tan Sri Kong Cho Ha at his house in Sitiawan.
People of all races thronged the home of the MCA leader to sample delicacies such as satay, roti jala, and oranges.
In GEORGETOWN, about 8,000 people attended the open house hosted by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng at Arena SPICE.
It was also attended by Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas and wife, Toh Puan Majimor Shariff and Deputy Chief Ministers, Datuk Abdul Rashid Hasnon and Dr P. Ramasamy.
In KOTA BAHARU, the Chinese in Kelantan celebrated Chinese New Year on a moderate scale.
“Many Chinese were made homeless by the massive floods which hit Kelantan in December last year,” said Kelantan MCA secretary Datuk Lua Choon Hann.
The Kelantan MCA distributed ‘ang pau’ of RM500 each to 500 Chinese flood victims in Gua Musang, Kuala Krai and Kota Baharu districts.
In KUALA TERENGGANU, Chinese New Year is celebrated on a moderate scale as Terengganu is still in a 40-day mourning until March 4.
Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman attended the MCA and the Gerakan open house.
He spent on hour at the open house jointly hosted by Terengganu MCA chairman Datuk Toh Chin Yaw and Terengganu Gerakan chairman Datuk Yap Kea Ping.
In KUCHING, thousands of people attended the open house hosted by Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) at its headquarters in Jalan Tan Sri Ong Kee Hui.
SUPP president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian and several Central Working Committee (CWC) members were seen entertaining visitors including Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Nancy Shukri.
In SANDAKAN, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman attended the open house hosted by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Sabah Gerakan and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS).
