JOHOR BAHARU – The national junior hockey squad will be fighting for third placing today after beating Pakistan 3-1 in their fifth match in the Sultan of Johor Cup Tournament at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium here, Saturday night.
The squad under coach Arul Selvaraj were clearly out to redeem their disappointment after losing to India on Thursday.
The attacking style yielded their first penalty corner which was converted by Muhammad Shahril Saabah in the fourth minute.
Two minutes later, the national squad netted their second goal from their third penalty corner which was converted by Muhd Najmi Farizal Jazlan.
With nine minutes of play left, Malaysia found the net for the third time via Muhammad Shahril.
Pakistan scored their consolation goal via a penalty corner converted by Abu Mahmood two minutes before the final whistle.
With their second win, the national under-21 hockey squad will meet Argentina today in the third/fourth classification match, which is an improvement on their fifth placing in the last edition.
Pakistan will square off with Australia for the fifth and sixth spots.
Earlier, Great Britain and India booked their berths in the final for the second time in the championship after defeating their respective opponents tonight.
In the last tournament, India beat Great Britain 2-1 to win the cup.
In tonight’s matches, Great Britain thrashed Argentina 3-0 while India edged Australia 1-0.
