KUALA LUMPUR: The national women’s football squad suffered their second straight defeat after suffering a 7-0 mauling by hosts, Vietnam in a Group B AFF Women’s Football Championship match at the Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City, last night.

The defeat saw Mohd Asyraaf Abdullah’s charges dumped out of contention for a semi-final spot while Vietnam are almost assured of a ticket to the semi-final spot following their second group victory.

For the record, Malaysia lost 0-3 to the Philippines while the hosts beat Myanmar 3-2 in their respective opening group matches on Saturday at the same venue.

In tonight’s match, the host side only need 55 seconds to open accounts after Huynh Nhu blasted home from an acute angle as the Malaysian defence stood hapless, as quoted in the AFF website;www.aseanfootball.org.

Stung by the early goal, the national side tightened its defence and held on until the end of the first half.

After the break, the flood gates opened as Vietnam doubled the score when Tran Thi Hong Nhung nodded home a corner from Nguyen Thi Muon in the 47th minutes before Nguyen Thi Nguyet made it 3-0 in the 59th minute.

Three minutes later, Huynh Nhu scored Vietnam’s fourth from the penalty spot after defender Norsuriani Mazli had fouled a Vietnam player inside the box.

Vietnam continued to pile on the pressure and Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung coolly converted a superbly taken corner in the 78th before scoring another two goals in the 82nd and 90th minutes, respectively.

In another group B match, Myanmar came back from a goal down to beat the Philippines 4-1.

Malaysia will face Myanmar while the Philippines take on Vietnam in the final preliminary matches on Wednesday.
