JOHOR BAHARU – Malaysia held New Zealand to a 1-1 draw in their second Sultan of Johor Cup hockey match at the Taman Daya hockey stadium here yesterday.
Coach Arul Selvaraj’s boys who lost 1-2 to Australia yesterday started the match in style and took the lead through Mohd Najmi Jazlan’s 12th minute penalty corner strike.
However, New Zealand came back from the half time break with renewed vigour and scored the equaliser in the 46th minute through Ben Radovonich.
Both teams had a number of opportunities to extend their lead but failed despite being awarded penalty corner strikes.
With one loss and a draw, Malaysia must beat favourite Great Britain on Wednesday to have any chance of making it to the final in the round robin competition.
Great Britain were installed as the favourite after whipping Pakistan 5-0 yesterday and beating India 2-0, today with goals from Benjamin Boon (28th min)and Samuel French (49th min).
Meanwhile, Pakistan recovered from the shocking 0-5 loss to Great Britain by holding Australia to a 1-1 draw.
