SHAH ALAM – The national futsal squad began their campaign in the 2014 Asean Football Federation (AFF) Futsal championships on the wrong footing when they were handed a 1-6 whipping by Indonesia in the opening match at the Malawati Stadium here FridaY.
The national squad were stung with two early goals by Indonesia’s Bambang Bayu Saptaji in the third minute and Andri Kustiawan added another five minutes later.
Malaysia scored their only goal via Mohd Khairul Effendy Mohd Bahrin in the 10th minute. In the second half, the national squad continued their shoddy performance by conceding another four goals.
National coach Maizal Hairi Marzuki said he was extremely disappointed with the team for putting up such a poor show in front of their home crowd.
“The squad made many fatal errors and they were slow to capitalise on several open chances…the players virtually lost their focus,” he told reporters.
Maizal Hairi said the team have no choice but to win in three other matches against Brunei tomorrow, Australia on Monday and Timor Leste on Tuesday to enter the next round.
Apart from Indonesia, Vietnam also chalked up an emphatic 6-1 win over Myanmar in group B with five goals scored in the first half.
In another group A match, Timor Leste beat Brunei 2-0 while Laos and Philippines were tied at 4-4 in a group B match. – Bernama
