IPOH – Malaysia clawed back to fourth spot when they edged Pakistan 1-0 in the 25th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup Hockey Tournament at the Azlan Shah Stadium here tonight.
The only goal of the match was netted by Malaysia’s captain Razie Rahim in the 4th minute from a penalty corner.
From the start, both teams played a fast attacking game but Malaysia cheered by 5,000 spectators controlled the game well.
The national squad successfully held on to their one goal lead despite numerous dangerous attempts by Pakistan until the end of the match.
Meanwhile, at he post-match media conference, coach Stephen Van Huizen said he was elated with the result tonight as the national team collected three precious points.
Van Huizen said there was slim chance for Malaysia to enter the final but he would place his bets on the national squad moving up to third and fourth placing.
On the match against India this Friday, he hoped his charges would perform well against the squad ranked seventh in the world.
With the victory, Malaysia now have eight points after five matches. Yesterday they were in 5th place.
Tomorrow is a rest day and the tournament will resume on Friday.
