KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian men’s team moved into the semifinals of the ISTAF Super Series Finals 2014/15 after emerging as Group B winners at the Nakhon Pathom Municipal Gymnasium in Thailand yesterday.
In today’s action, Malaysia beat Singapore 2-0 and again beat South Korea by the same score (2-0) to secure an unbeaten record in the tournament thus far.
Malaysia, coached by Abdul Talib Ahmad are expected to face Group A runner-up the Philippines in the semifinals today.
Malaysia had beaten Japan 2-0 to register their first win.
In the first match yesterday, Muhammad Syahir Mohd Rosdi, Farhan Adam and Khairol Zaman Hamir Akhbar beat Singapore 21-13, 21-14 and the South Korean regu 23-21, 21-13.
Abdul Talib who was elated by the performance of his charges said the Malaysian regu were given a tough resistance by Singapore early in the match but managed give a good account of themselves.
“The combination of Muhammad Syahir, Farhan and Khairol Zaman is beginning to blend well,” he was quoted as saying in the ISTAF website www.istafsuperseries.com.
Defending champion Thailand also registered a clean record in Group A by beating Myanmar 21-4, 21-8, the Philippines 21-12, 21-17 and India 21-6, 21-8.
The Malaysian women’s regu are scheduled to face Japan for 5th/6th placing after losing 0-2 to Myanmar and Thailand respectively in Group B.
The final is a culmination of three earlier series held in Naypyitaw, Myanmar (November 2014); Melaka, Malaysia (February 2015) and Gunsan City, South Korea (April 2015).
