IPOH, April 11 (Bernama) — Malaysia finally found their touch at the 24th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup Hockey Championships when they beat Canada 4-1 at the Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Stadium here Saturday night.
With the victory, the national squad completed the tournament in fifth spot with six points from two wins.
Following that, Tai Beng Hai’s charges will meet Canada again for the fifth and sixth positions playoff today evening.
Malaysia put on the pressure with waves of attacks right from the whistle and opened the score in the fifth minute through Muhammad Haziq Shamsul.
A minute later, Malaysia were rewarded with a second goal courtesy of Nabil Fiqri Mohammad Noor.
In the second half, the national squad continued to attack the Canadian defence and netted the third goal via Tengku Ahmad Tajudin in the 38th minute.
Matthew Sarmento however pulled one back for Canada via a penalty corner in the 40th minute.
Nonetheless, Malaysia widened the score further when Muhammad Haziq was on target again in the 43rd minute, to seal a comfortable win for the host.
Meanwhile at the same venue this evening, India defeated Australia 4-2 while New Zealand drew 3-3 with South Korea.
With the results, Australia will meet Zealand in the final tomorrow night while South Korea will meet India to decide the third and fourth placings.
