KUALA LUMPUR – Defending champion Malaysia boosted its chances of clinching a spot in the semifinals after beating the Philippines 4-0 in the 2014 Axiata Cup at the Britama Arena in Jakarta, yesterday.
The win saw Malaysia move into third spot with 15 points behind Indonesia and Thailand while a win against Singapore in their final match today would seal a spot in the semis.
Indonesia became the first team to book a ticket to the semis after collecting 18 points from four wins and a draw.
Indonesia will next face European All Stars and complete their fixture against Thailand.
Only the top four teams from the competition which features eights teams, advance to the semifinals to be held at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium in Cheras on Sunday and Monday.
Thailand meanwhile, are currently in second spot with 18 points while Asian All Stars with 12 points are in fourth place while European All Stars are fifth with 10 points.
The Axiata Cup, the richest badminton event with a prize money of RM3.42 million, features eight teams, namely Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Asian All Stars and European All Stars.
