KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Under-16 football team suffered their first defeat in the 2014 AFC U-16 Football Championship in Thailand after losing 0-1 to South Korea.
The squad, also known as Harimau Muda, lost 0-1 to South Korea in their second group A match held at Muangthong Stadium in Bangkok, yesterday.
Forward, Lee Seungwoo emerged as the hero for the two-time champions after scoring the solitary goal in the 15th minute of the match that was telecast live in the local paid television.
The win saw South Korea extending their lead in Group A with six points after two matches while Malaysia under the tutelage of coach S. Balachandran remained in second spot despite the defeat with three points.
Thailand who lost 0-1 to Malaysia in the opening match on Saturday, chalked up their first victory by beating Oman 1-0 in another group A match.
Malaysia will complete their group fixtures against Oman at the Rajamangala Stadium, here while South Korea will play Thailand at the Muangthong Stadium on Wednesday.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the last eight of the tournament.
For the record, Malaysia has qualified for the tournament twice before – 2004 in Japan and 2008 in Uzbekistan – but failed to get past the group stage. – Bernama
