KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia needs to make early preparation for the 2023 Asian Cup tournament if the Harimau Malaya squad is to regain its former glory as one of the giants of Asian football.
Under 23 head coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee said the players need to continue the good showing at the AFC U-23 tournament in China recently.
“We cannot stop or become satisfied. I have to work on areas that need improvement. In four years, some of them (players) will be in the senior squad for the Asian Cup. All the planning must start from now,” he said when met at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Sepang, today.
Kim Swee said he would meet with Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim to discuss the direction of the U-23 squad.
The U-23 squad did exceptionally well by making the quarter-final of the AFC U-23 tournament after beating Saudi Arabia 1-0 in the last Group C match.
Malaysia lost 1-2 to South Korea in the quarter-final at Kunshan Stadium, China. – BERNAMA
