KUALA LUMPUR – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today that solidarity among the various races in the country must be further strengthened through commonalities.
He said racial solidarity was not merely a ‘label’, but empowered through a more open thinking and sentiments.
“The question of solidarity and neighbourliness are no longer temporary in nature such as attending a gathering, sports day or feast. It must be accompanied with a more open heart and thinking,” he said at the 1Malaysia Rukun Tetangga Gathering 2016 at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, here.
He said the new generation currently must also be moulded and taught to have the caring attitude and to respect all races, communities and religions.
“I hope a new generation can be initiated to create solidarity. Something must be done and a holistic transformation must be empowered so that solidarity can be enjoyed in the country,” he said.
Ahmad Zahid also said that the Rukun Tetangga must be rebranded as an instrument to strengthen solidarity in line with current developments.
He said the contents of the Rukun Tetangga must be reviewed to give emphasis on the aspect of caring instead of focusing merely on interactions.
Also present at the event were Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup and more than 7,000 members of the Rukun Tetangga communities from all over the country. – BERNAMA
