PETALING JAYA: PAS’ attempt to get support for the Private Members’ Bills in Parliament is not about hudud but to suggest amendments to the Syariah Court Act, said Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
In an open letter penned by him on Thursday, the PAS president said he wants the amendments to accommodate one or two aspects of the law applicable for Muslims only.
“We are knowledgeable, civilised and matured beings. So, first learn what we are going to present.
“Do not just jump and shout criticisms without knowing the end of the base,†he said.
Abdul Hadi said after 20 years since the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code (11) was introduced by PAS, the party wants to move a step forward in educating the people about Syariah laws.
“The enactment is undergoing fine-tuning by taking into account the challenges in the constitution and pluralistic society which is not forced, and meant for Muslims only after considering the opinions from ulamas,†he added.
Last week, Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob tabled amendments to the Syariah Criminal Code II (1993) to enable the implementation of PAS’ hudud in the state.-The Star
